Preventative Maintenance for Your Underground Propane Tank

So I purchased and installed an underground propane tank.

  • Out of sight out of mind right?
  • WRONG!
  • What am I ignoring here?!
  • Well attached to your propane tank was an anode. A sacrificial anode (aka-cathodic protection).
  • OK so what?!
  • That bag of magnesium that was attached to your tank is providing the tank protection from rusting. It works the exact same way an anode on a ship’s hull works. An anode, in the most elementary terms, is a hunk of metal (we use magnesium). When attached to another metal called a cathode (in this case your LP underground tank), the anode will shower the cathode with so many electrons, the cathodic metal (your underground propane tank)l won’t suffer from the ill effects of the ever present soil or waters electrical current. It will not corrode and rust away. The "sacrificial anode" on the other hand, will eventually corrode away into nothing; thus the name "sacrificial anode". Perfect! That’s its sole function. So when you bury a propane tank, it is susceptible to those adverse effects of the ever present underground electrical current. Eventually, the tank would corrode and rust. The tank may start to leak. Enter the sacrificial anode. When we attach an anode via wire to the underground tank and bury it with the tank, it will make the tank *cathodic and protect it from corrosion and rust; thus the term "cathodic protection".
  • Yikes!! How can I determine if my anodes are “working or not?” Protecting my investment?
  • With an annual electrical testing program by JAGER SERVICES LLC to determine if anodes are protecting your tank and determine if additional anodes need to be installed.
    Testing is done at the site of the tank. Multiple tests are taken and recorded on a form that we will provide to you on the completion of the testing. And we keep one for our file.
    We will present you with one of two outcomes.
    #1 Tank is protected at this time nothing more to be done except ongoing yearly testing
    #2 Tank is not protected and we will propose additional anode(s) to increase the cathodic protection back to NFPA standards by installing an additional anode and retesting in approximately two weeks.
  • Can the test determine if the tank is leaking?
  • No only by a very complex process involving your gas supplier. The test only identifies that your system is currently having active adequate electrical protection.
    We will also visually inspect the entire bonnet assembly and the tank appurtenances to make sure they are installed and no visible signs of failure or blockages or excessive corrosion of the regulators and pigtails. We will take photos and document our findings and a report generated for you.

*Cathodic Protection (CP) is an electrochemical process where DC current is applied to a metal to slow or stop corrosion currents. Cathodic protection is often used to protect steel from corrosion. Corrosion is caused when two dissimilar metals are submerged in an electrolytic substance such as water, soil, or concrete.

This type of metal conducting path between the two dissimilar metals allows a pathway through which free electrons move from the more active metal (anode) to the less active metal (cathode). If free electrons from the anode do not reach active sites on the cathode before the arrival of oxygen, ions at the active sites can then recombine to produce ferrous hydroxide, i.e. rust.
